On Wednesday 15 February as a College community we made our way to the Our Lady of the Way Church for the Opening Mass and Commissioning of our Student Leaders and Year 12 students. It was a chance to for the whole college to come together and celebrate the start of the year and look ahead to what the year has installed. This year Mt Maria College Petrie, along with all Marist schools around the world are recognizing the 200th anniversary of the foundation of the Marist Brothers in 1817. The Marists global theme is asking us all to Awaken” that is to wake up to a new way of acting and being in the world. A particular quote from Pope Francis tells us to; “Wake up the world! Be witnesses of a different way of doing things, of acting, of living”. Therefore, the Mass readings revolved around this theme. In Fr Chima’s homily he encouraged us all to take on board this message and to particularly “reach of the stars”.
Reach for the stars was how we welcomed our new Year 7 students to the college. We encouraged them to share their unique gifts and talents with each other and the college community and to lead by example. They have the example of the “stars” already in the college via their peers and fellow students. As a community we were challenged to nurture, grow and develop each other as we continue our journey of education this year.
It was a wonderful celebration and recognition of our students and college community that was ended with a wonderful morning tea in the KSC.
Thank you to all parents and friends who attended and to all staff for their involvement and help and support to make this event such a success. We are all looking to the “stars” as we continue our educational journey in 2017. For some of us it is the start of the end while for others it is the start of the beginning.
